TIPS FOR AVOIDING TICK BITES

Like you, ticks are at their most active during the warmest months of the year—and they’re just lying in wait for an unsuspecting host to brush by! Steer clear of them this summer by taking some simple precautions to prevent ticks

How to Prevent Ticks

Limit your exposure to ticks and prevent them from hitching a ride on your socks or clothing by avoiding tick nesting areas. When hiking or biking on outdoor adventures with your family, travel in the middle of the path—not at the edges where ticks may hide in tall grass or brush.

Eliminate tick hiding places in your yard by cleaning up leaf litter, cutting tall grasses and keeping shrubs and bushes trimmed. Finally, dress smartly while adventuring or camping in brushy areas! Wear long pants and high socks with boots or closed-toe shoes.

How to Identify & Remove Ticks

After a hiking or camping trip, it’s important to check yourself and your family for ticks before you carry them home! Ticks can hitch a ride on your clothing and then attach to you later. Carefully examine clothing and equipment for ticks before you go inside. Once home, throw your clothes in the dryer at high heat for an hour to kill any ticks that remain.

If you spot a tick on your body, remove it right away:

  1. Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  2. Then, pull upward with steady, even pressure to remove the tick
  3. Once you remove it, be sure to thoroughly clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
